Exclusive Shore Event: Calvi | Historic Lama, Olive Oil and Traditional Corsican Lunch
We will be meet on the pier prior to departing for a scenic drive to the medieval village of Lama. Lama is one of the most beautiful and authentic Corsican villages on the island. Lama was an important center for olive oil production and the resulting prosperity produced a charming town that is beautiful to explore today.
Lama has had a long and sometimes turbulent history. The earliest houses in Lama, square buildings with dry-stone walls, were built in the 12th century. Peasant families fled the insecurity of the valley and the barbarian incursions to build their houses on a rocky ridge. The oldest known document concerning the village is dated 1206. In the 17th century, the city-state of Genoa, the colonial power occupying Corsica, decided to cultivate trees in Corsica and focused on Lama. The village already had wild olive trees and its golden age began when the order was given, in 1607, for them to be grafted and cultivated.
For three centuries after 1607, Lama lived to the rhythm of olive harvesting and the pressing of oil. Over time, its olive groves grew and with 35,000 trees it became one of the largest in Corsica and even in France. As in other villages in the interior of Corsica, agricultural activity in Lama languished during the 20th century. Many Corsicans fought and died in the two world wars, resulting in the decline of the village. Lama, in good years, could produce nearly 27,000 gallons of oil. It was said that the olive oil from Lama was the only one that could compete with oils from Provence.
Lama's architectural interest lies essentially in the coexistence and harmony of two different styles: the original medieval section of the town consisting of small houses built against each other with narrow streets and arched passages; and the more modern 18th Century section with large bourgeois houses built by the prosperous olive growers. Returning from their studies in Italy, the children of these bourgeois imitated what they had seen in Rome, Florence and Venice and the homes featured Florentine belvederes with the interiors decorated with superb paintings in the Italian style.
Today we have the opportunity to be hosted by Tony Ceccaldi, a leading figure in the revival of olive oil production in Lama. He will host us at his home where we will have the opportunity visit his restored traditional olive oil mill and learn about his efforts to keep the local traditions alive. We will then enjoy a rustic lunch of Corsican regional specialties and wine with him.
Following lunch we will continue our exploration of Lama before returning to the pier in Calvi by 4:00 pm.
Approximate Length: Seven hours.
Suggested Attire: Resort casual with comfortable walking shoes recommended. There will be light to moderate walking on uneven surfaces.
